On Wednesday, Governor Walz signed the One Minnesota Budget into law alongside Lieutenant Governor Flanagan. The One Minnesota Budget:
- Provides the largest tax cut in state history
- Lowers costs and delivers direct payments to Minnesotans
- Cuts child poverty
- Increases funding for public education
- Invests in Minnesota’s workforce and economic expansion
“In January, I outlined a vision to make Minnesota the best state in the nation for kids to grow up in. Today, we’re turning that vision into reality,” said Governor Walz. “The work we’ve done over the last five months will make a generational impact on our state – it will lower costs, improve lives, and cut child poverty. The One Minnesota Budget delivers for Minnesotans, and it would not be possible without the leadership and partnership with the DFL-led legislature. I am grateful for their work and look forward to seeing this budget in action.”
“From significantly cutting child poverty to lowering costs for Minnesotans across the state, we are leading with our values and keeping our promises by building the state and the future that our children deserve,” said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan. “The One Minnesota Budget is historic, deeply rooted in equity, and decades in the making. None of this work would have been possible without our partners in the legislature, our organizers and advocates, our testifiers, our parents, our young people, and our community members from every part of the state. This day and this victory are for you.”
On Thursday, Governor Walz signed a bill providing paid family and medical leave for Minnesotans into law.
“Paid family and medical leave is about investing in the people that made our state and economy strong in the first place,” said Governor Walz. “By signing paid family and medical leave into law, we’re ensuring Minnesotans no longer have to make the choice between a paycheck and taking time off to care for a new baby or a sick family member. For the sustainability and health of our workforce and the future of our economy, I’m proud to sign this into law.”
“Whether it’s a new baby in the family, sick kiddo, mental health struggle, or life-altering diagnosis, everyone deserves paid time away from work to heal, grow, and live,” said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan. “Today, Minnesota is leading with our values of caring for one other by getting paid family and medical leave across the finish line. This victory for our workers, our families, and our economy has been a long time coming, and I am so grateful to the folks who didn’t give up the fight.”
Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan honored the memory of George Floyd on Thursday, May 25, proclaiming George Floyd Remembrance Day in the state of Minnesota.
"True justice for George Floyd will come only through real, systemic, and lasting change in Minnesota. We have more work to do to ensure that every person in Minnesota is safe, valued, and protected. We owe that much to Mr. Floyd, and we owe that much to each other," said Governor Walz.
"George Floyd should be alive today. On the anniversary of his murder, we are reminded that true justice for George Floyd means listening and moving forward with intention to build a state where Black Minnesotans and Minnesotans of color are safe and protected," said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan. "George Floyd’s daughter, Gianna, was right when she said that her daddy changed the world. But it is still up to us to change our hearts, do the work, and ensure that his legacy leads to a better state for our future generations."
Governor Walz has ordered all United States and Minnesota flags to fly at half-staff, from sunrise until noon on Monday, May 29, 2023, in honor of those who have died while serving in the United States military.
“Memorial Day serves as a day of remembrance for people to gather for one purpose: to remember our fallen, pay homage to their sacrifice and courage, and recognize the selflessness of military service,” reads the proclamation issued by Governor Walz. “We honor those today who made the ultimate sacrifice for this great nation.”
