On Sunday, April 24 at 6 p.m., Governor Walz will deliver his fourth State of the State address from the State Capitol. This will be the Governor's first in-person State of the State address since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019. Minnesotans can tune in on their local PBS station.
Governor Walz visited Cub Foods in North Minneapolis on Wednesday to discuss the importance of delivering $2 billion in direct relief to Minnesota families through Walz Checks. Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan’s Budget to Move Minnesota Forward proposes distributing Walz Checks of up to $1,000 directly to Minnesotans – single tax filers would receive a payment of $500 while a married couple would receive a payment of $1,000. More than 2.7 million Minnesota households would receive a Walz Check under this proposal.
Governor Walz stood alongside Senator Klobuchar, Senator Smith, a bipartisan group of legislators, and community leaders on Tuesday to break ground on a new project to expand 12.5 miles of Highway 14 between New Ulm and Nicollet in southwest Minnesota. This work will complete a continuous four-lane highway between New Ulm and Rochester.
Also on Tuesday, Governor Walz visited Willmar to discuss efforts to fight the spread of the avian flu. Two weeks ago, Governor Walz signed a bill to advance the state’s continued efforts to control and contain the virus. The current outbreak in Minnesota poses a high risk to poultry but a low risk to the public, and there is no food safety concern for consumers.
Governor Walz addressed attendees at the Veterans Day on the Hill on Wednesday. During the event, Governor Walz discussed ways the state can strengthen its support for Minnesota veterans and their families.
"It was an honor to join my fellow veterans at Veterans Day on the Hill today," said Governor Walz. "Minnesota’s veterans are more than 320,000 strong, and it’s our duty to ensure that those who raised their hand to serve our country receive the resources and support they deserve when they return home."
On Thursday, Governor Walz addressed attendees at the Asian Pacific Islander Day on the Hill. Governor Walz discussed efforts to support Minnesota's Asian Pacific Islander community and praised the community's resiliency amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
"It was great to be at the Asian Pacific Islander Day to join in the celebration of all their accomplishments and uplift this powerful community," said Governor Walz.
Earlier this month, Governor Walz announced that he will appoint a new Addiction and Recovery Director to lead addiction and recovery work as well as direct the subcabinet and advisory council. The Addiction and Recovery Director will report to Governor Walz and work with the Office of Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan to be the administration’s key point person for the state’s efforts to address opioids, substance use, and addiction in Minnesota.
Minnesotans can apply by April 29 and find more information online.
