When Minnesota legislators return for the 2018 session next week, they're going to be working on a bonding bill - and Minnesota State University Moorhead is hoping they'll be included.
Larry Pogemiller is Higher Education Commissioner at the Minnesota Office of Higher Education. He spent Wednesday afternoon taking a tour of buildings on the MSUM campus in need of renovations. Four buildings need general upkeep, such as new doors, windows, HVAC and other improvements.
"When you have buildings that are historic and functional at the same time, it attracts students, and it attracts community. And that's what I think they're trying to do here, because of how vital this institution has been to this community all these years - they want to make sure that it stays vital, and important."
The total of MSUM's funding request is estimated at $9.3 million.

MOORHEAD, Minn. — Minnesota legislators are about to return to St. Paul and debate Governor Dayton’s state bonding bill. A few items on that list are proposed renovations to the MSUM campus. The buildings on the MSUM campus are a mixture of old and new.
The university says renovations are needed to keep the older ones running efficiently and to meet the needs of the modern college student.
Community leaders agree that it’s an important part of keeping the region thriving.
“They’re critically important for the overall vitality of these campuses – to keep these campuses competitive,” said State Rep. Ben Lien (DFL) of District 4A.
Weld Hall was built in 1915 and is the centerpiece of the proposed renovations. The school hopes the project will allow the building for the campus’s changing needs.
