St. Paul lawyer is state’s first judge of Hmong descent

Pioneer Press | December 1, 2017

A St. Paul woman has become the state’s first judge of Hmong descent.

Gov. Mark Dayton named attorney Sophia Vuelo to the Ramsey County District Court bench on Thursday, Minnesota Public Radio reported. The position was open because the previous judge retired.

Vuelo was raised in Wisconsin and received degrees from the University of Minnesota and the Hamline University School of Law, which is now part of the Mitchell Hamline School of Law in St. Paul. She currently handles cases in juvenile protection, family and criminal matters at her solo practice in St. Paul. Vuelo has also worked in various prosecuting roles.

Smith, Massman behind Gov. Dayton's recent "green" order

Star Tribune | November 30, 2017

Matt Massman, Minnesota’s commissioner of administration, oversees a far-flung network of buildings, vehicles and other equipment used by 30,000 state employees.

He noted last week that the state capitol complex has cut its energy use by 24 percent over a decade thanks to money-saving investments, largely in things like new windows and efficient HVAC equipment.

“We save about $2 million a year,” Massman said last week. “We also have 226 hybrids and 16 electric vehicles in our fleet of 2,000. State agencies have been reflecting the value of energy and environment. We do need to get more focused.”

The new work group will develop recommendations designed to protect the rights of about 85,000 Minnesotans in state-licensed homes for seniors, including changes to state law that would reduce the secrecy that often surrounds state abuse investigations..

Dayton uses own cancer recovery to tout screening

MPR | December 4, 2017

Gov. Mark Dayton declared himself cancer-free on Monday while urging Minnesotans to make time to get screened for cancer if they have risk factors or family history of the disease.

In proclaiming this "Cancer Screen Week" in Minnesota, Dayton credited his own early diagnosis with helping him beat cancer. Around this time last year, the 70-year-old Dayton was alerted through an annual physical exam to his likely prostate cancer. It was confirmed by a specialist and Dayton underwent surgery six weeks later.

"Fortunately, up until this point, I'm cancer free. And that early detection was just crucial," he said, adding that it was caught before it could spread to other organs.
