As the new academic year begins, we are excited about the great things happening at Minnesota State. Our colleges and universities have awarded 12,990 North Star Promise Scholarships for fall semester and enrollment is up across the system. Minnesota State continues to build the workforce of the future—driving the Minnesota economy. Of course, what we’re most excited about is the impact a Minnesota State education has for our students. Below are stories featuring two students who have experienced that life-changing education.

Metro State Alum Serves as Role Model She Never Had

It took a while for Stevie Middlebrook to decide what she wanted to do with her life. After giving birth to her son in 2016, she realized that teaching was her calling. She decided the Early Childhood Urban Education program at Metro State was the perfect place to make that happen. Now she is in her second year of teaching at the Metro Deaf School in St. Paul.

First-generation Inver Hills Student has Big Plans for Future

Hayley Ahr graduated with an associate of science degree from Inver Hills Community College in May 2024. But Hayley isn’t stopping there. She is now working on her bachelor’s degree with her eyes set on earning a master’s after that. This first-generation student served as vice president for both the college’s Phi Theta Kappa Alpha Omicron Beta chapter and the student senate.
