Lane Splitting and Lane Filtering are Coming July 1

Beginning July 1 in Minnesota, motorcyclists can legally “lane split," which allows a motorcycle to pass another vehicle in the same direction of travel and in the same traffic lane at no more than 25 mph and at no more than 15 mph over the speed of traffic in relevant traffic lanes.

“Lane filtering” will also become legal July 1. Lane filtering allows motorcycles to move through traffic that is stopped, such as at a traffic light or traffic jam, at a speed no more than 15 mph over the speed of traffic in the relevant traffic lanes.

It is a motorcyclist’s responsibility to determine if these maneuvers can safely be performed in a given situation and it is a motorist’s responsibility to be aware of motorcycles sharing your lane in slow-moving traffic and when stopped at intersections. It is against the law for motorists to impede a motorcycle driver from legally performing lane splitting or filtering.
