Recognizing Minnesota’s Vietnam Veterans

Commissioner Lindsay

On March 29, the nation observes Vietnam Veterans Day, a time to honor and thank the millions of U.S. armed forces members who served between 1964 and 1975.

The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 designates March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day, a fitting choice for a day honoring Vietnam Veterans. It was chosen to be observed in perpetuity because March 29, 1973, was the day that the United States Military Assistance Command-Vietnam was disestablished and also the day that the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam. In addition, on and around this same day, Hanoi released the last of its acknowledged prisoners of war.

Linda’s journey began in 1976, when she followed in her father’s footsteps and enlisted in the Minnesota Air National Guard. “My dad said it would be a good way to make college money,” she recalls. Instead, she chose a full-time path with the Air National Guard — one that would define her professional life.
