They say patience is a virtue. And good things come to those who wait.

Those sayings ring true for the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) and several Minnesota communities which will in 2023 experience the results of years – some even decades – of advocacy. This coming year will bring the opening of four new MDVA facilities across our great state.


Minnesota Veterans Homes in Fergus Falls and Luverne named ‘Best Nursing Homes’

The Minnesota State Veterans Homes in both Fergus Falls and Luverne have been recognized as one of the “Best Nursing Homes” for 2022-2023 according to U.S. News and World Report magazine. U.S. News evaluated over 15,000 nursing homes while completing their research. Only 16% of U.S. skilled nursing facilities earned the “Best Nursing Home” designation this year.


MDVA Presents FY 2022 Annual Report


The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs is proud to share our Fiscal Year 2022 Annual Report (July 1, 2021 - June 30, 2022) is now available. Wellbeing is the theme of the Annual Report which highlights our priorities and accomplishments from the last year. MDVA is here to support and enhance all aspects of Veteran and family wellbeing, from providing safe housing to the homeless to mental health support to those in crisis, from financial aid to those struggling to healthcare to the aging.

Did you know when you buy the “Support Our Troops” (SOT) License Plate, you are helping Minnesota Veterans and their families?

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) distributes funds raised by the sale of SOT license plates to numerous organizations that support Minnesota Veterans and their families. Learn more about the SOT grant program on our website.


Minnesota Military Radio Celebrates 12th Year of Partnership


For over 12 years, the Minnesota National Guard has had a unique outlet with which to communicate its stories of service to the communities of Minnesota. Since its inception, Minnesota Military Radio has been a product of partnership and community support.


Someone to Talk to: 988 Chat and Text

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (the Lifeline) is an easier to remember and easier to dial number to reach trained suicide prevention and crisis counselors, but it’s also a lot more. It now includes two more ways people can connect with the Lifeline – through chatting or texting. In a moment of crisis or distress, Minnesotans now have the option to call, chat, or text the Lifeline.



State Veterans Homes receive $80,000 donation from Department of Minnesota Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 906

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) is honored to receive a very generous donation of $80,000 from the Department of Minnesota Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Charles McLaughlin Post 906 in Hutchinson, MN. This donation specifically was provided to each individual State Veterans Home, which will receive $10,000 per location.

VFW Commander Dale Hoogeveen, VFW Charitable Gambling Manager Doug Johnson and Jerry Tews, Charles McLaughlin Post 906 member, presented the checks to MDVA senior leadership and Homes’ public affairs, development and community engagement representatives at the VFW Midwinter Conference on January 13.


Minnesota Veterans Home - Montevideo Selects Administrator


Ashley Bormann has been named Administrator for the Minnesota Veterans Home - Montevideo, which is scheduled to open in mid-2023.

Ashley has served as a Nursing Home Administrator since 2014. She brings experience with planning and opening new facilities to this role as well as a passion for ensuring the best quality of care and quality of life for Residents.


Celebrating MLK Day


On January 16, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs was proud to join with other state agencies in the 37th annual MLK Day celebration at the Ordway Center for Performing Arts in St. Paul. Developed by the Governor’s Council on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday and hosted by Governor Walz and Lt. Governor Flanagan, the event recognized the historic achievements of Dr. King and how important it is to carry forward his legacy, wisdom and work.
