Commissioner Herke new

It’s our honor

Recent Independence Day celebrations featured the boom and exploding colors of fireworks set to the music of our national anthem, with clothes and decorations sporting red, white and blue, with stars and stripes abounding. Patriotism swells in our hearts and tears may come to our eyes as we hear the lyrics:

I’m proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I'd gladly stand up next to you
And defend Her still today…

But would most people “defend Her still today”?

While national holidays remind us of the freedoms we enjoy, the number of Americans who actually raise their hands to serve our country continues to decline.

Silver Bay Veterans Home 30th Anniversary

silver bay 30th

Since opening in 1991, the Minnesota Veterans Home - Silver Bay has cared for more than 1,100 Veterans and spouses in their beautiful location near Lake Superior. The beautiful scenery is only matched by the dedication and compassion of the staff who treat the Residents like family and are honored to serve those who have served.

A celebration marking the 30th anniversary of the Silver Bay Veterans Home was held outdoors on Saturday, July 9 under sunny skies and warm summer temperatures. Residents, families, staff and community visitors enjoyed live music, refreshments, and a chance to take a trip down memory lane by paging through photo albums and viewing biographies of 30-year tenured staff.

MDVA hosted groundbreaking events in August 2021 and construction began last September. Currently, Bemidji is 37 percent completed, Montevideo is 41 percent done, and Preston is 44 percent finished. Homes are scheduled to open as planned in mid-2023.

Post 9/11 Veteran Service Bonus Available

post 9-11

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) has a long history of awarding service bonuses to Minnesota Veterans who served in America’s wars. Starting in 1919 after World War I, through World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, and now the Global War on Terrorism. MDVA recognizes the sacrifices and courage Minnesotans took to defend our country.

The 2022 Legislature passed and Governor Walz signed the first-ever Veterans Omnibus Bill that included funding for a service bonus payable to eligible Veterans who served from 9/11/01 to 8/30/21. MDVA is honored to facilitate this program for eligible Veterans, currently serving service members, or Veterans' beneficiaries.

The application period began on July 7, 2022. The last day to apply is June 30, 2024, unless the funds have been exhausted by then.
