Desk of the Commissioner - April

Commissioner Herke new

Over the past year, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) has publicized the groundbreaking and ongoing construction of our three new State Veterans Homes in Bemidji, Montevideo and Preston. However, equally important is the maintenance and updates to our five existing Veterans Homes. And no where is that more critical than the Hastings Veterans Home.

While MDVA has operated the Veterans Home there for more than 40 years, the buildings’ origins date back to 1902 when the site served as a state hospital for the mentally ill. Over the course of 100 years, more than a dozen separate buildings were constructed on the campus, and numerous renovations and updates have been completed. However, of the nine buildings on the campus, six are at or near the end of their useful life.

VA Approves New St. Cloud Vet Center Outstation

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs plans to create a Vet Center Outstation in St. Cloud, providing confidential counseling for eligible Veterans and service members, including members of the National Guard and Reserves and their families.

Vet Center Outstations are community-based satellites in leased spaces where at least one full-time counselor can provide services at no cost to the Veteran or service member. These convenient locations are equipped with rooms for individual and group counseling, a reception area, facilities, and staff break room. Services and staffing levels can adjust and expand as community demand increases. A Vet Center Outstation complements the 300 physical Vet Centers across the U.S., in every state and territory, providing individual, group, couples and family counseling, and referral services to other VA or community resources.

Earth Week

Earth week

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) celebrates Earth Week, April 18-22, a globally recognized week dedicated to increasing awareness and encouraging action that supports lowering our environmental footprint.

As Minnesota’s climate continues to change, we are seeing warmer temperatures, shorter winters, and more frequent and extreme precipitation events. In response, MDVA’s strategic plan includes being an exemplary steward of natural resources which also helps improve the quality of life for Veterans and MDVA staff and promotes fiscal responsibility, according to MDVA Commissioner Larry Herke. “MDVA’s sustainability initiatives are guided by Governor Walz’s Executive Order 19-27 and focus on reducing water and energy use, fossil fuel consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions while increasing waste diversion and sustainable procurement. We are continually making progress toward these goals,” Commissioner Herke says.
