Commissioner Herke new

Happy Holidays! On behalf of the more than 1,500 dedicated employees at the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA), I wish you and your families a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year.

These past two years have certainly been a challenge across our state, our country and the world, as we have continued to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. However, MDVA has adjusted, and our team has demonstrated resiliency. We did not allow the pandemic to deter us from our mission of “serving Minnesota Veterans, their dependents and survivors by connecting them with the federal and state care and benefits they have earned.”

Holiday Wreath Donations for State Veterans Cemeteries

During the winter holidays, in particular, we work to create a special environment where meaningful, one-of-a-kind memories can be shared. This environment is enhanced by memorial wreaths that are placed on all headstones.

In 2021, the Minnesota non-profit organization that took the lead in purchasing these wreaths for the State Veterans Cemeteries—a significant financial investment—is unable to do so.

Minnesota Seeks to Train 1,000 as CNAs

Governor Tim Walz recently announced a new initiative to recruit, train and deploy at least 1,000 new certified nursing assistants (CNAs) by the end of January for Minnesota long-term care facilities experiencing staffing shortages. The five Minnesota Veterans Homes could benefit from this as all locations are hiring CNAs referred to as Human Services Technicians (HSTs) in Minnesota state government. Learn more about MDVA job openings at MinnesotaVeteran.org/Careers.

The effort is a partnership between state government, colleges and long-term care providers led by the Minnesota Office of Higher Education. It will recruit qualified Minnesotans and enroll them in certification courses at Minnesota State campuses.

Resilience is the theme of the MDVA Fiscal Year 2021 Annual Report. The report is now available on our website.

The FY21 Annual Report reflects the period of July 1, 2020 - June 30, 2021 and highlights our priorities and accomplishments from the last year. From the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic to the excitement of planning for three new State Veterans Homes and one new State Veterans Cemetery, the last year has been both challenging and rewarding.

Printed copies have recently been mailed to stakeholders and a supply will be provided to each MDVA location as well. To request a printed copy, please email MDVA.Communications@state.mn.us.

Pearl Harbor Day Remembrance Held December 7

Pearl Harbor Event

Minnesotans have often found themselves on the frontline of history. At no time was that more true than on December 7, 1941. Eighty years later, Minnesotans are finding new ways to never forget Pearl Harbor and redoubling efforts to share the stories of Minnesota’s WWII Veterans with future generations.

Minnesotans remembered the 80th anniversary of the deadly Pearl Harbor attacks by participating in a special virtual program hosted by the Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum. The program featured two noted authors, the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Veteran Affairs and others.
