Message from Mike McElhiney, Chief of Staff

Mike McElhiney

At its core, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs is people helping people. Our employees are passionate about helping Veterans, honoring their service, and ensuring they and their families receive the benefits they have earned.

MDVA needs good people. And our Human Resources team facilitates the process to identify candidates, interview, hire and onboard new employees. It’s a critical role to staff the agency with the best talent.

Human Resources is one of several support areas I have the privilege to guide. We are excited to be hiring two Human Resources leaders as our agency continues to grow. The Human Resources Director 4 will lead our entire HR team that provides the entire breadth of services for our 1,500 employees. And the Human Resources Director 2 will lead the HR staff at our future Veterans Homes to be built in Bemidji, Montevideo and Preston. These are both exciting opportunities for seasoned HR professionals to make a difference as our staff expands to serve even more Minnesota Veterans.

I encourage you to explore a career with MDVA. We have a variety of positions directly serving Veterans and many others behind the scenes supporting our amazing team. Join us!

Kasie Roberts-Palos
Compensation and Human Resource Information Systems Specialist

Degrees: Bachelor of Science in Political Science and International Relations and Masters of Science in Human Resource Management

Years at MDVA: Four

Career path to today: I’d like to refine my skills and see where the construction of the new homes takes our agency as I think there will be opportunity for growth and advancement.

Why I enjoy working at MDVA: Variety! I get to work with the entire agency and interact with all sorts of people. With that opportunity, I try to let people know that HR is really here to help.

Why do you choose to stay at MDVA: I initially applied at the MDVA because my father is a Colonel in the Army. I know he will likely one day be in the care of one of our homes and laid to rest at one of our cemeteries. I stay because the updated mission takes into account the family members of those who served. Coming from a long line of military and having numerous friends who have served and are serving, it is nice to know that others I care for will get support from an agency I know.

Anjali Bajracharya
Human Resources Generalist

Degrees: Masters in Business Administration with a Human Resources Specialization

Years at MDVA: Less than one

Career path to today: Prior to joining MDVA, I was the Assistant Human Resources Director at St. Paul College. I’ve also worked in the private sector for more than eight years and have supported many areas in Human Resources including recruitment and selection, job audits, Affirmative Action Plans, hiring and onboarding process and procedure improvements, orientation and performance management.

Why I chose to work at MDVA: I was first interested working at MDVA as it is a bigger agency and is known for serving Veterans and their families. I enjoy working here because along with all the other areas of HR, during the hiring process we also focus on diversity, hiring veterans, etc. I consider it an honor to work for MDVA.
