I’ve got my vaccine. Have you?

COVID-19 vaccinations dominate the headlines. Moderna. Pfizer. Johnson & Johnson. One dose. Two doses. Where and when to schedule an appointment?

I support the COVID-19 vaccine as a critical step toward achieving 80% of the population immunized, creating herd immunity, to overcome this pandemic. We will then be able to return to the things we miss and love. Spending time with extended family. Going to a ball game or concert. Dining out with a group of friends.

Three New Veterans Homes Move forward

new homes

In late March, MDVA learned that federal funding would be provided to build three new State Veterans Homes projects to be located in Bemidji, Montevideo and Preston. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced its State Home Construction Grants FY 2021 Conditional Approvals. This investment will allow MDVA to expand State Veterans Homes into three new communities to serve elderly Veterans living in all corners on the state.

Month of the Military Child

In April, Minnesotans across the state celebrate the "Month of the Military Child." It is estimated that more than 23,000 children in Minnesota have at least one parent or guardian currently serving on military duty. In recognition of their sacrifice, we take the time to celebrate children of Service Members and Veterans during this month.

Governor Tim Walz will send children of military members and Veterans a letter of gratitude in honor of their service and sacrifice.

Veterans Homes Residents Benefit from Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation Grant

Delta Dental

While the focus of the last year has been on protecting seniors from the coronavirus pandemic, the Minnesota Veterans Homes have continued a holistic approach to Residents’ care by expanding an oral health program that provides on-site dental services, thanks in part to a generous grant from the Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation.

Photo Caption: Silver Bay Veterans Home Resident David Beasley had been hospitalized for more than three months due to several medical challenges. When he was released back to the Silver Bay Veterans Home, he was not able to eat very well because of changes with his dentition and his lower partial. He was losing weight which affected his overall recovery.

Because he was not a candidate to see a local dentist, the Dental team’s Dentist Dr. Gustafson and Dental Hygienist Katie McNamara traveled to Silver Bay to assess Mr. Beasley’s situation and provided necessary adjustments to his lower partial. This improved his ability to eat more substantial food, leading to weight gain and a better recovery.
