Happy New Year! A new year, a new decade and a renewed commitment to serving Minnesota Veterans and their families and ensuring they receive the benefits they have earned.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since I began my role as Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA). As I reflected in last month’s blog, we have accomplished so much in the last year and are proud of the work we have done, much of it collaboratively with varied stakeholders and Veterans Service Organizations.

Historic Truss Bridge Reopens at Minneapolis Veterans Home

Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Larry Herke cut the ribbon on the historic truss bridge over Minnehaha Creek at the Minneapolis Veterans Home on January 9. In attendance were state lawmakers, Veterans Service Organizations, MDVA employees, police officers, firefighters and community members. It was a big day for our Residents, their families and the community!

New Doors Open to Homeless Veterans

A homeless Veteran and her three small children are the first tenants of a newly remodeled apartment in Chaska, moving into one of four units that will be offered to homeless Veterans after the facilities are restored. This apartment complex is a partnership between the Carver County Community Development Agency (CDA), Carver County, and the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV).

The Defense Department recently announced expanded commissary, military service exchange and MWR access Jan. 1 and established a standard for physical access to military installations.
