Month of the Military Child

Military Child

In April, Minnesotans across the state celebrate the "Month of the Military Child." It is estimated that over 15,000 children in Minnesota have been affected by a parent's deployment. In recognition of their sacrifice, we take the time to celebrate children of Service Members and Veterans during this month.

Governor Tim Walz will send children of military members and Veterans a letter of gratitude in honor of their service and sacrifice.

Warrior Writers Workship, May 16

The Warrior Writers Workshop provides a safe space for Veterans to tell their own stories, using prompts and discussion covering a variety of military issues and experiences.

This workshop encourages sharing stories, opinions, and ideas for productive writing, reflecting, storytelling, and art-making. A highlight of this workshop for many Veterans is having a space to release bottled-up thoughts and emotions alongside others who understand, creating a sense of empowerment in the ability to tell their own story. By creating an open and accepting atmosphere, the goal is to build a community of support.

This workshop is for any service member or Veteran, regardless of experiences with writing, combat, art, deployment, etc.

Veterans' Voices Award

For the past six years, the Minnesota Humanities Center has honored Veterans who contribute in myriad ways to their communities, state, and country. The 2019 Veterans’ Voices Award Ceremony will continue to honor the outstanding work of Minnesota’s Veterans in an exciting new format that features their personal stories. Through poetry, prose, essays, memoirs, and more, Veterans find their voice, process their experiences, and connect with others. On October 5, this year’s Ceremony will feature Veterans sharing their written work at a public gathering at Union Depot in St. Paul.

Prior to the ceremony, the Humanities Center will host five Warrior Writers Workshops around the state from April 14 to July 13 to help Veterans become more comfortable telling their stories. Workshops are free and open to all interested Veterans, and while it’s not mandatory to attend a workshop to submit to the award, it is encouraged. Attendance will not influence the award selection process.

Submissions should explore themes of: Combat & Non-Combat, Duty, Family, Motivation, Perceptions, Reintegration, Service, and Transformation.
