In late March, I had the opportunity to attend the annual Vietnam War Commemoration event at the Fergus Falls Veterans Home. The event was well attended by Vietnam Veterans living at the Home and by the Vietnam Veterans from the community at large.

CBS This Morning - Ending Veteran Homelessness

CBS this Morning Saturday Host Dana Jacobson sat down for conversations with Governor Tim Walz, Commisisoner Larry Herke, MACV, Veterans and other partners to talk about the unique program and collaboration we have here in Minnesota to end Veteran Homelessness. "If we can't end Veteran homelessness, then we can't end homelessness in society."

Veterans Homes Survey

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs wants to better understand the long-term needs of Veterans as we plan and develop three future Veterans Homes in Preston, Bemidji and Montevideo. To help achieve this, we are looking for Veterans or family members of Veterans willing to participate in a 15 to 20-minute online survey about the needs, services and experiences of Veterans. The survey will be open through April 26.

Competitive SOT Grant Cycle Open

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs is now accepting applications for competitive Support our Troops (SOT) grants through Friday, April 26. For more information, including the application, visit our grants page. Detailed instructions are outlined in the application.

SOT grants are for Minnesota organizations with programs designed to “support and improve the lives of Veterans and their families.” Eligible organizations may apply for grants ranging from $1,000 to $100,000.

National American Legion Commander Visits St. Cloud State University

On Tuesday, March 12, Commissioner Larry Herke made a visit to Saint Cloud State University (SCSU) to help welcome National American Legion Commander Brett Reistead. Commander Reistead visited SCSU during his National American Legion tour. Commander Reistead was also welcomed by Minnesota American Legion Commander Darrel Redepenning, SCSU Provost Dr. Daniel Gregory and Mayor of Saint Cloud Dave Kleis. In his tour, Commander Reistad visited delegation at American Legions and VA around the United States.

Women Veterans Conference

On Saturday, March 23, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) in partnership with the Women Veterans Initiative hosted the 2019 Women Veterans conference. More than 200 Veterans of all ages and branches were in attendance at the YMCA Maplewood Community Center to enjoy a day of wellness and camaraderie.

2019 Veterans Day on the Hill Rally

On March 20, the Minnesota Commanders’ Task Force, together with the United Veterans Legislative Council and the Minnesota Association of County Veterans Service Officers held a non-partisan Veterans Day on the Hill event to announce their 2019 legislative agenda. Veterans Day on the Hill was a day where Minnesota Veterans of all eras united as one common voice to represent the 327,000 Veterans in our state. Veterans, Governor Tim Walz, State Legislators and members of the community gathered together to pack the rotunda and show support for Minnesota’s Veterans.
