Bells of Peace

Women Physicians in WWI, Nov. 9

This exhibition celebrates the contributions of these unsung heroes — women, who despite capabilities equal to their male colleagues, were not permitted the same military rank and privilege. Unable to surmount these barriers, they still made lasting contributions to the war effort. Many went as volunteer physicians, focusing on the care of women and children in war-torn areas of Europe. Featured profiles include Dr. Kate Karpeles, the first woman contract surgeon, Dr. Rosalie Slaughter Morton, founding chair of AMWA’s War Service Committee, and Dr. Esther Pohl Lovejoy, founding president of the Medical Women’s International Association. A collection of articles, book chapters, and historic photographs provide additional insight into this important era.

About the Vietnam War Commemoration:

Authorized by Congress, established under the Secretary of Defense, and launched by the President in May 2012, the Vietnam War Commemoration recognizes all men and women who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces from November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975.  Nine million Americans, approximately 7 million living today, served during that period, and the Commemoration makes no distinction between Veterans who served in-country, in-theater, or were stationed elsewhere during that period. All answered the call of duty.

By presidential proclamation issued on May 25, 2012, the Commemoration extends from its inaugural event on Memorial Day 2012 through Veterans Day 2025.

St. Cloud VA celebrates National Veterans and Military Families Month 2018 with events honoring Veterans and their families

From the St. Cloud VA Health Care System, Nov. 1:

St. CLOUD, MINN: This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI. VA facilities in communities across the nation take time to offer a special recognition of the significance of the U.S. participation in the ‘war to end all wars’. For 99 of the past 100 years, Americans have remembered those who served our country in uniform on November 11 in the Great War – first as Armistice Day, and then, since 1954 as Veterans Day. As first declared by the President last year, this year November again marks a month of recognizing our Veterans and their families in service to our country and communities.
