If you are like me, you are wondering how the summer days seem to fly by so fast! I cannot help but notice how the staff here in St. Paul work diligently during the week but when they return from the weekend, they display that sunburnt redness that we cherish. The best time to drive in the cities is on a summer’s weekend day. But avoid Friday evening if leaving or Sunday evening if coming home to the metro. Summer weekend traffic is bumper to bumper!

Hire a Veteran Month

Governor Mark Dayton has proclaimed the month of July, 2018 to be “Hire a Veteran Month” in the State of Minnesota. Governor Dayton’s proclamation encourages all Minnesota employers to help connect military service members with employment opportunities during the month of July, and to continue hiring Veterans throughout the year. As part of “Hire a Veteran Month”, Governor Dayton encourages Minnesota Veterans to attend the 12th Annual Veteran’s Career Fair taking place on Wednesday, July 18 from 2 – 6 p.m.

Heroes & History Documentary

Sitting high above the Mississippi River, the Minneapolis Veterans Home has provided care and respite for our state’s Veterans since the 1880s. Meet Veterans and staff and learn how this historic site has changed to meet the needs of its Residents. This video is co-produced with MDVA. View the promo here. Ceremonial Check Presented to Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) recently announced Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe as one of the recipients of the competitive Support Our Troops (SOT) license plate fund grant program. With this $100,000 grant leaders purchased a new handicapped accessible van that will be used to transport Veterans to various US Department of Veterans Affairs medical facilities. A ceremonial check was presented to leaders of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe by MDVA Deputy Commissioner Brad Lindsay as they unveiled their new van to the community.

Special Dedication at Minneapolis Veterans Home to Honor Vietnam Veteran Skip Schmidt & Family

On June 13 the Community Room inside Building 22 at the Minneapolis Veterans Home was given a special dedication to Wallace R. (Skip) Schmidt. He was a Vietnam Veteran, Silver Star and Purple Heart recipient, member of the “The Twins Platoon” and a native of South Minneapolis. Additionally, this Community Room dedication honors Residents and families associated with the Vietnam War.

Medicare Users Prepare to Receive a New Card and Number

In April, Medicare began mailing new Medicare cards with a fresh look that includes a new number. The new Medicare numbers do not change a user’s Medicare coverage or familiar benefits. The mailing of new cards will be staggered throughout the year, with completion expected by April, 2019.
