Proposed rules relating to school bus safety
On Monday, Oct. 19, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) will publish a Notice of Intent to Adopt Rules Without a Public Hearing for its rules on school bus safety.
What do the rules do?
The proposed rules amend safety and operational practices for school bus drivers when transporting students to or from school or a school-related trip or activity. These updated safety and operational practices reflect statutory changes and incorporate best practices in school bus safety developed by the National Congress on School Transportation.
The rules also clarify requirements on transporting students with disabilities for consistency with state and federal requirements.
These rules are enforced by the Minnesota State Patrol, which regulates school buses operating on public streets or highways. Within the State Patrol, the Office of Pupil Transportation Safety oversees all DPS-related activities for school bus safety.
