NG911 Collaboration Events underway

Thank you to everyone who has joined us so far at the NG911 Collaboration Events. Your engagement has made these conversations collaborative and insightful as we develop the strategic plan for Minnesota's NG911 rollout.

Discussion at these events has focused on the day-to-day realities of 911 center operations, from small incidents to large-scale, muti-agency events. Participants expressed their local community needs and gave input on how they would like to see NG911 managed. These conversations are critical as Minnesota continues planning for NG911 core services, which will include improved call routing, location validation and policy-based routing supported by accurate GIS data.

We value your participation and look forward to continuing this work together. Stay tuned for more information on next steps.

New deputy director of communications and interoperability at DPS

Nate Smolinski is the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s new deputy director of communications and interoperability.

Smolinski recently joined the Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) division after more than a decade working in emergency communications as the statewide interoperability coordinator and chief technology officer for the Wyoming Department of Transportation.

Operational notice: T-Mobile international 911 caller number display

For 911 calls from international devices originating outside the North American Numbering Plan, T-Mobile may display the full international callback number in the Customer Name/NAM field instead of ANI.

It may appear as:

CBN:+[international number]

PSAPs and ECCs should brief telecommunicators, supervisors, trainers and technical staff to check the customer name/NAM field for these T-Mobile international callback numbers.

T-Mobile implemented this interim feature in preparation for increased international visitors during FIFA World Cup activity and intends to keep it in place until NG911 Phase 2 is deployed for applicable PSAPs.

For operational questions, contact ECN. For carrier-specific or technical questions, contact T-Mobile through established public safety support channels.

Dave Denton heads to Fort Hood for yearlong mobilization

Dave Denton, ECN’s longest-serving employee, is heading to Fort Hood, Texas, for a year-long deployment. Dave joined ECN in 2013 and currently serves as a 911 program analyst, working with the network team to help ensure Minnesota’s 911 services are ready to support emergency response statewide.

In his military role, Dave serves as a Command Sergeants Major (CSM) for an Observer Controller/Trainer (OC/T) Battalion, helping his commander make decisions and supporting the morale, health and welfare of soldiers for their unit. During this mobilization, he will be advising and assisting command teams as they prepare their units for future missions.

“A big part of my role is making sure soldiers are taken care of,” Dave said. “I help guide and mentor junior enlisted soldiers, Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and junior officers, and I support my commander in making decisions. That’s what I’m looking forward to — the chance to advise and help soldiers and command teams be ready for whatever comes next."

Dave has served in the National Guard or Army Reserve since 1986 and will mark 40 years of service in August. His career includes nearly 30 years with the Minnesota National Guard, two deployments to Iraq and time stationed in Germany. While he’ll be based in Texas, Dave plans to continue supporting ECN part-time during nights, weekends and off hours.

We are grateful for Dave’s service to both Minnesota and our country. We wish him, and his cat Bentley, all the best as they head south for this next chapter!
