State Fire Marshal

Important announcement for

Minnesota fire chiefs

The 2025 data year recently passed the halfway point, and due to upcoming changes at the federal level, the State Fire Marshal (SFM) division will have an abbreviated reporting window.

Starting in 2026, the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS) is replacing the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS). We are asking that all 2025 NFIRS fire incident reports be entered into the state’s database no later than Jan. 5, 2026. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) will be turning off NFIRS imports at the end of January and SFM will need time to transfer the more than 400,000 records for the year.

You can see a tally of reports by month for all the departments in our system. This is current through Sept. 10, 2025. Please take a moment to find your department on the list and ensure that your department is reporting, as expected, into the state database.

  • If your department uses direct entry into the state’s ImageTrend Elite system, please have your designated fire incident reporting manager enter any missing reports as soon as possible.
  • If your department employs a third-party records management system to log and export your incidents to the state database (e.g. FirstDue, ESO), please have your designated fire incident reporting manager check your reporting for gaps and deficiencies and send those files to fm.data.team@state.mn.us so we can add them to the system as soon as possible.

We encourage fire incident reporting managers from all Minnesota departments to log into the state’s ImageTrend Elite system regularly to monitor their activity and ensure all incidents are 100% valid in the system.

Please do not wait to enter your fire incident reports. It’s important that departments keep a keen eye on their reporting to ensure they are not scrambling to enter and complete reports at the deadline.

2025 is going to be a historic year for fire incident reporting. We appreciate your cooperation in making sure our data is accurate, reliable and impactful. Please reach out with any questions you may have and check this page for any NERIS updates.
