Scam alert: fake emails and texts

We've received reports of scam texts requesting payment that claim to be from Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS).

What's happening?

People in Minnesota are receiving fake emails and texts from “Minnesota Department of Motor Vehicles (DPSMN)”, "Minnesota (DVS)", or "Minnesota Department of Vehicle Administration (DMV)" about outstanding penalties and traffic tickets. We will never send a text asking for money or saying money is due.

What to do

If someone receives a suspicious message:

  • Do not respond to the message or click any links. The Department of Public Safety and DVS will never ask for information or money by text.
  • Do not give money or personal information.
  • Contact DVS if they think the message is real through our website at drive.mn.gov.
  • Report the message as junk or spam and delete it.

If you or a customer received one of these messages and fell victim to the scam, file a report with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center: https://www.ic3.gov/
