Help customers get what they need
We care about how community members feel about the service they receive from DVS, DR and DLA locations. Some community members are feeling frustrated with inconsistent messaging and service related to REAL ID credentials. Customers need to receive consistent messaging to avoid confusion and frustration.
As of May 7, 2025, individuals need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card to board domestic flights or access certain federal facilities.
DVS has received reports that some offices are discouraging customers from applying for a REAL ID-compliant card. We all need to support our community in REAL ID efforts. Please do not discourage customers from applying for a REAL ID-compliant credential. Encourage them to apply for a REAL ID-compliant card if they ask about it or might need one. Applicants for a REAL ID must bring specific documents, including proof of identity, residency, and know their Social Security numbers.
If applicants do not have certain documents necessary for a REAL ID compliant card, they have the option of applying for a variance, which will be reviewed by DVS. Applicants can also use the pre-verify online feature to ensure they have the appropriate documents before showing up to an office to apply.
Your partnership plays a valuable role in creating awareness about the REAL ID requirements plus sharing clear and encouraging information about the REAL ID requirements and application process.
