Important reminders for DL and ID documents
- Be careful and pay extra attention to documents being taken from customers. Only acceptable supporting documents must be taken to complete transactions. Non-accepted documents must be given back to the applicant.
- Ensure that the correct document taken in is what is being checked off in MNDRIVE, especially related to citizen documents in connection with automatic voter registration. More details will follow in Time with Training on July 16 & 17, 2024.
REAL ID VS EDL
The REAL ID enforcement date is May 7, 2025. REAL ID and enhanced driver's license/identification (EDL/EID) cards have some things in common but are not the same!
Individuals 18 and older with a REAL ID can use it to board domestic flights, enter certain federal facilities, enter nuclear power plants or military bases. An EDL meets REAL ID requirements. The major difference between the two is that an EDL or EID can also be used to cross the border between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean, if you are crossing in a car, truck, or boat.
Some additional differences that apply to EDL/EID:
- EDL/EID has an extra $15 fee to cover the cost of the RFID chip in the card.
- Variances are not accepted for EDL/EID, only standard and REAL ID cards.
Standard, REAL ID, and enhanced cards can all be used for lawful driving and to show identification.
Use the most recent third-party proctor list
The list of third-party proctors for knowledge testing is regularly updated by DVS. Make sure your office is using the latest version. It is available near the top of the Third-Pary Online Knowledge Testing page.
New third-party proctor MOU
In the coming weeks, DVS will be sending out an updated Third-Party Proctor Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for administering the Class D knowledge test. If your office is currently a proctor, please watch out for it, review it, get it signed by the appropriate individual and return it before the deadline that will accompany the MOU notice. The updated MOU will also be posted to the DVS website.
