Reminder: July 1: Know your Social Security number for REAL ID

As of July 1, customers no longer need to bring proof of their social security number for REAL ID documentation. The customer must know and provide the number, but they do not have to show the document. And their number must pass SSOLV.

For more information see the REAL ID FAQs and scroll down to REAL ID Modernization Act.

  • Added REAL ID driver's license, permit or ID card that is not marked as limited term or temporary, and that is valid or up to five years expired.
  • Added unexpired foreign passport or unrecognized Passport or Waiver Cases (DS-232) with unexpired temporary I-551 stamp on machine-readable immigrant visa (MRIV).
  • Added unexpired temporary I-551 stamp on Form I-94/I-94A with photograph.

    • Document I-797 needed for proof of extension: if the validity period has been automatically extended by the United States Department of Homeland Security, it is deemed unexpired, regardless of the expiration date listed.

The REAL ID required documents handout has been updated.

Aug. 1: Updated documents for standard ID/DL

This legislation updated documents for standard driver's license and ID applications. We have updated the primary/secondary documents list.

  • Tribal ID card expanded to include all unexpired identification cards (not just Minnesota!) issued by a tribal government of a tribe recognized by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, that contains the legal name, date of birth, signature, and picture of the enrolled tribal member.
  • Conditions removed from Canadian naturalization certificate.
  • Unemployment insurance no longer has to be issued within 90 days of application.
  • Certificate of Minnesota vehicle title no longer has to be issued within 12 months of date of application.
  • Minnesota property tax statement no longer needs to be current or prior year and address no longer has to match.

Aug. 1: New version of the driver's manual is available

The driver's manual has been updated to include recent legislative changes, improved images and was revised for plain language. Discard any old copies and refer to the updated version available above and on the website. The updated version is only available in English at this time.

Legislative changes:

  • Information on electric-assist bicycles has been added (chapter four).
  • New section about vulnerable road users (chapter four).
  • Updates to child passenger safety laws (chapter three).

Aug. 1: Veteran indicator expanded

This legislation added "honorably discharged" from the National Guard as acceptable proof for adding a Veteran indicator.

Note: An applicant who is still in the military cannot add the veteran indicator.

Motor Vehicle

Aug. 1: Recreational vehicles under 3,000 pounds need recreational trailer plates

Statue language was clarified to make it explicit that recreational vehicles under 3,000 pounds are required to have recreational trailer plates. They cannot be issued permanent registration.

Aug. 1: Veterans service group emblems on special plates

This legislative change allows for congressionally chartered veterans service organizations to apply for Veteran Service Group plates on vehicles owned by the organization. It also removes the limit of two sets of the special plates that can be issued to an applicant.

For example, this legislative change allows vehicles owned by the Disabled American Veterans organization to put Disabled Amercian Veteran plates on the organizations' vehicles.
