New QR code sign for DL/ID pre-app

We recently created a new QR code sign that takes customers directly to the e-Services page to pre-apply for a driver's license or identification card. You are welcome to print and post this sign in your office.

CDL general knowledge test waiver update

As of Jan. 1, 2024, DVS will waive any applicable CDL knowledge tests for applicants that have already passed those tests and held a CDL (including air brake general knowledge test, passenger, etc.).

Some examples are:

  • If a driver has a CDL for a passenger bus, they only need to take the school bus knowledge test to obtain their commercial learner's permit (CLP) for School Bus.
    • A Class A driver with a passenger endorsement who does not have an air brake restriction (i.e. charter bus driver), would only need to take the school bus endorsement test and a driving test in a school bus. They would not need to retake the Passenger test.
  • Someone who has a Class A driver’s license without any restrictions and wants to add School Bus would only need to take Passenger and School Bus to get the CLP.
  • Customers must take all applicable knowledge test(s) when adding an endorsement for the first time.
  • Someone who has a Class B unrestricted and wants to get a Class A would only need to take Combination test to get their CLP.
  • A MN CLP holder whose permit expired may now reapply for a new CLP without retaking any tests.

Design error on Vikings plates

During the finalization of the new Minnesota Vikings license plate design, the color of the neck of the Norseman was changed from peach to yellow. DVS is working with the Minnesota Vikings Foundation to approve an updated design with the appropriate color. DVS is also working to remove existing inventory from the system so that no additional plates go out with the incorrect neck color. Until these changes are implemented and new stock is issued, please only issue Vikings plates as on demand and do not issue any from stock. Your liaison will work with you on disposal of existing inventory and restocking.

DVS is determining next steps for customers who were already issued incorrect Vikings plates. We will provide an update as soon as we are able. Assure any customer who asks that they will hear from DVS soon regarding their options.
