Careless smoking causes fatal fires.
After more than 40 years in the fire service, retired State Fire Marshal Jim Smith will never forget one of his early calls. The cause of the fire: a lit cigarette that had fallen between two couch cushions. The homeowner didn't even smoke. The living room that became a burnt mess had been filled with laughter and joy the night before as the homeowner hosted a birthday party.
-
Smoking kills: There were 67 fatal fires in Minnesota in 2021, and a carelessly discarded cigarette caused 35 percent of them.
-
Intoxicants increase danger: Out of the 88 people who died in smoking-related fires between 2011 and 2020, 43 percent had a measurable blood-alcohol content.
-
Prevent fires: Smoke outside, dispose of cigarettes in sand or water and never smoke while using medical oxygen.

Col. Matt Langer presents the new online accountability dashboard while Commissioner Bob Jacobson looks on.
The Minnesota State Patrol launched an online accountability dashboard on our Department of Public Safety (DPS) website this month, giving the public easier access to data, policies and other information about the agency.
-
Our goal: Promote accountability and build trust between the State Patrol and the people we serve.
-
Drive toward excellence: “We are committed to serving everyone in this state with purpose and compassion," DPS Commissioner Bob Jacobson said. “When you look at this dashboard, you'll see the State Patrol's dedication to the people of Minnesota and keeping them safe."

-
New tool: We launched the new tool Feb. 1 and have already completed more than 900 record requests.
-
Two types of records: A certified driving record includes your entire driving history in Minnesota. A noncertified record shows a five-year history of driver convictions.

Ask a Trooper
Question: My son recently got his driver’s license. Does his name need to be on the proof of auto insurance card?
Answer: Minnesota accepts proof of auto insurance on paper or electronically. Your son’s name doesn’t need to be listed on the card as long as someone’s is. Talk to your auto insurance agent about adding him to your coverage.
