U.S. Secret Service Research, Analysis and Key Findings of Averted and Targeted School Violence

The U.S. Secret Service Minneapolis Field Office and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety invite you to attend a FREE event:

This is NOT active shooter response training.

For over 20 years, the U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) has conducted research on the thinking and behaviors of those who commit acts of targeted school violence in an effort to prevent future tragedies.  Key findings from this research indicate that establishing multidisciplinary threat assessment teams and encouraging school communities to report concerning behaviors are critical steps in the prevention of targeted violence.

This presentation will highlight past incidents as well as relevant findings and recommendations from NTAC’s latest research on targeted school violence and averted school attacks in the United States.  It will also focus on how communities can use a multidisciplinary approach to identify, assess, and intervene with students exhibiting concerning or threatening behaviors as early as possible.

The Averted School Violence (ASV) reporting system, developed with support from the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Office, will allow law enforcement officers, school personnel, and mental health professionals to share “close calls” in order to improve school safety and prevent tragedies.

The mission is to encourage individuals to share their stories and lessons learned from averted school violence incidents in order to prevent future injuries and fatalities in educational institutions. The lessons learned can be used to inform future school policy and safety procedures.

The Averted School Violence Near Miss Reporting System is a voluntary, non-punitive and anonymous means to share your stories and lessons learned to help prevent future tragedies from occurring. Ultimately, the collection of averted school violence incidents will allow for the identification of patterns that can be used to inform training, policies, and practices aimed at improving school safety and security.

Individuals are encouraged to submit averted school violence cases, in which loss of life and or injury were completely prevented. In reviewing cases for inclusion in the database we look for means, opportunity, motive and intent to carry out targeted school violence. Incidents of violence on school grounds not related to the school (e.g., gang-related violence) and social media threats not deemed credible by law enforcement are excluded from the database.

Visit the Averted School Violence webpage for more information. Email questions, comments or concerns to asvnearmiss@policinginstitute.org or call 202.833.1469
