Driving through the work zone
Wadena businesses will remain open for everyone, but here's what to expect:
-
Traffic will be open to one lane in each direction in both work areas.
-
Watch for narrow lanes, closed shoulders, reduced speeds, lane shifts and flaggers.
- Potential temporary changes to business accesses.
- Pedestrians will encounter sidewalk closures; follow signs.
- Plan for changes as construction activities progress.
-
Hwy 29 and 71 truck detour—Because the work zone has limited space for large‑vehicle turning movements, a truck detour will be in effect through early September.
The truck detour uses Co. Rd. 75, Hwy 10 and Hwy 71. Select image to enlarge.
Hwy 10 detour continues until July 3
Hwy 10 remains closed to through traffic between Co. Rd. 4 and Oink Joint Rd./140th St. while crews continue to remove poor soils and complete drainage installation. We're on track to reopen the roadway in time for the Fourth of July holiday weekend. :)
-
DETOUR: Follow detour signs along Co. Rd. 4 and Co. Rd. 23.
- Watch for a temporary all-way stop at Co. Rd. 4 and Co. Rd. 23.
- Business access is maintained within the closed work zone.
- Hwy 10 is open east and west of the closure.
- Please follow detour and business signing through the work zone.
Crews are installing a new box culvert to improve drainage for Whiskey Creek. Similar to Union Creek, it includes a rock‑lined streambed to help create a natural environment for fish, turtles and other aquatic species.
Off-road trucks are moving the poor soils taken out of the roadbed to nearby ditches and borrow areas, where the material will be reused as topsoil.
When completed by August 2027, travelers will enjoy a new expanded four-lane highway through Wadena with roundabouts, updated underground services and improved pedestrian access.
