Metro - I-35W in Burnsville: 2025-2026 construction
This is a reminder that I-35W will be closed this weekend in Burnsville. Beginning at 9 p.m. Fri, May 1, I-35W will be closed in both directions between I-494 and the I-35/I-35E/I-35W split through 5 a.m. Mon, May 4. Traffic will be detoured to I-35, I-35E, Hwy 77 and I-494.
All ramps on I-35W in both directions between I-494 and the I-35/I-35E/I-35W split will also be closed during this time.
During this closure, crews will demolish the eastbound Hwy 13 bridge, patch northbound I-35W, and prepare for traffic shifts on I-35W.
We appreciate your patience while we make these improvements. Plan ahead by checking 511, and give yourself additional time to reach your destination.
All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule permitting and subject to change.
Please drive with care in work zones:
- Slow down when approaching every work zone, then navigate with care and caution.
- Stay alert; work zones constantly change.
- Watch for workers and slow-moving equipment.
- Obey posted speed limits. The fine for a violation in a work zone is $300.
- Minimize distractions behind the wheel.
- Be patient; expect delays, especially during peak travel times.

In coordination with the City of Burnsville and Dakota County, we will resurface I-35W and repair or replace bridges between Cliff Rd. and the Burnsville split during the 2025 and 2026 construction seasons.
Crews expect to complete the work in fall 2026. Once finished, this stretch of I-35W will have a smoother road surface and an extended bridge and pavement life.
