Metro - I-35W in Burnsville: 2025-2026 construction
Starting at 9 a.m. Fri, April 24 through fall, crews will close the ramps from eastbound Hwy 13 to northbound I-35W and from southbound I-35W to eastbound Hwy 13. These closures were originally scheduled to start the evening of April 24. Motorists traveling in the area can use the following detours during the ramp closures:
-
Eastbound Hwy 13 to northbound I-35W detour: Eastbound Hwy 13 to Nicollet Ave. to Cliff Rd. to northbound I-35W
-
Southbound I-35W to eastbound Hwy 13 detour: Southbound I-35W to Burnsville Pkwy. to Nicollet Ave. to eastbound Hwy 13
Hwy 13 is currently reduced to one lane in both directions between Nicollet Ave. and I-35W through noon Fri, April 24. Then, starting at noon Fri, April 24 through fall, Hwy 13 will be reduced to one lane in both directions over I-35W. This switch was also originally scheduled to start in the evening of April 24.
These closures are necessary for crews to complete improvements to the eastbound Hwy 13 bridge and ramps.
We appreciate your patience while we make these improvements. Plan ahead by checking 511, and give yourself additional time to reach your destination.
All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule permitting and subject to change.
Please drive with care in work zones:
- Slow down when approaching every work zone, then navigate with care and caution.
- Stay alert; work zones constantly change.
- Watch for workers and slow-moving equipment.
- Obey posted speed limits. The fine for a violation in a work zone is $300.
- Minimize distractions behind the wheel.
- Be patient; expect delays, especially during peak travel times.

In coordination with the City of Burnsville and Dakota County, we will resurface I-35W and repair or replace bridges between Cliff Rd. and the Burnsville split during the 2025 and 2026 construction seasons.
Crews expect to complete the work in fall 2026. Once finished, this stretch of I-35W will have a smoother road surface and an extended bridge and pavement life.
