The official start of construction season is right around the corner, but work on the 11th Street underpass project has been ongoing through the winter. You can expect to see construction operations back in full swing by May, or as weather allows. Most of our work remains isolated to the currently closed portions of Center Avenue and 11th Street, and that's what you can expect through completion of the project as we're in the final stage and final year of construction of the underpasses!

To kick-off this last leg of the underpass project, and to highlight some of the other road work planned in the area, MnDOT and the City of Moorhead are hosting a joint open house on Tuesday, March 24, 4-6 p.m., at Moorhead's Hjemkomst Center, located at 202 1st Ave N. No presentation planned, just stop by when it's convenient!
Get progress updates on this project, and learn more about other work in the area that may impact your commute. MnDOT and city reps will be there to answer your questions.
See you there!

When Center Avenue closed at the end of October, crews got to work on removals and installed the pipe for the storm drain connection. They took a pause during the holidays, but when weather allowed in January and February, they worked on pouring the faces of several retaining walls and started driving pile for the remaining two. You'll start to see more and more activity as the weather warms up!
Center Avenue/Stage 3 work began in November, with removals and installation of the storm drain pipe connection
Crews install the 11th street pipe connection from Main Avenue
Winter work included pouring retaining walls
The work zone won't change much this year for the underpass project. Stage 3 closures on Center Avenue and 11th Street remain in place, as they were over the winter, and that's what can be expected through the completion of the work.
Important city work to remember: This year, in coordination with the underpass project, the City of Moorhead will be reconstructing Center Avenue between 10th Street and 8th Street. More to come from the City of Moorhead on that project's schedule and staging.
Moving into the spring and summer, crews will continue their excavations on the underpass project and finish the retaining walls. They have one final part to tie together for the underground utilities, and then will start grading the new roadway underneath the underpass bridges on 11th Street and rebuilding Center Avenue. We are still on schedule for completion in Fall 2026.
As always, we appreciate your patience and understanding as the project progresses.
We'll resume our monthly "Coffee & Construction" meetings starting May 19 at 9 a.m., at the Hjemkomst Center. These meetings will be held the third Tuesday of each month, through the duration of construction (or as interest/attendance remains steady).
At these meetings you can expect a short overview on progress from the contractor and MnDOT, and the opportunity for anyone to ask questions or share concerns. If you can't make it, that's OK—we will continue to send out these email updates that will cover the same progress information!

Train horns have resumed in the Downtown Quiet Zone during construction hours (Monday - Friday, 6am - 7pm). This is a requirement of the railroad, and we appreciate your understanding as worker safety is prioritized.
-
Moorhead businesses are open during construction! If your destination falls within/near the work zone or along the detour routes, please check in with the business to determine the best route there.
-
Never enter an area that's blocked by barriers or cones. It is not safe to drive, walk or bike around barricades, even in areas where workers aren't present or active. Those boundaries are set up for your safety. There are signed detours installed for both motorists and pedestrians. Please use those routes.

There may be other projects in Moorhead that could affect your travel routes, so please check in with the City of Moorhead for plans and impacts. Visit their website or follow the City of Moorhead on Facebook.
Please report any issues to the 11th Street Underpass hotline number at 218-292-8779.
