In recognition of National Women in Construction Week, the Office of Civil Rights spotlights staff member Orlanda Klinkhammer, marketing outreach coordinator, who is a finalist for Finance & Commerce magazine’s Top Women in Construction award. A 39-year MnDOT employee, Klinkhammer is included in the "Outstanding Service to the Industry" category.
"My initial reaction was surprise," she said. "I even wondered whether the nomination was legitimate and shared it with my supervisor to confirm. Once it was verified, I felt a mix of emotions, like shock, humility and deep appreciation. I was truly honored to be nominated."
Klinkhammer started with the agency in 1987 and has spent her entire career in the Office of Civil Rights. Her role focuses on supporting small and disadvantaged businesses through networking and training, and works with DBE, TGB, and Veteran-owned firms as they navigate government contracting.
"I didn’t begin my career with a clearly defined path or a full understanding of highway heavy construction, federal funding programs, or business development." Klinkhammer said. "However, once I started, I found the work and the programs truly interesting. What I enjoy most about my career are the long-lasting friendships I’ve built along the way and the opportunity to see small businesses succeed and grow within the industry. Being part of that success has been incredibly rewarding."
Category winners and an overall Top Woman in Construction will be announced at the conclusion of Women in Construction week during a Saturday, March 7 gala at International Market Square in Minneapolis, and featured in a special Finance & Commerce publication.
