D6 - I-90 and Hwy 52 interchange: 2024-2025 construction
Work wraps up for winter, back for final year in 2026
The closed sections of Interstate 90 and Highway 52 are open today, Friday, Nov. 14.
Thank you for your patience during this year of construction. Your attention to safety and following the detour have kept our crews safe. Thank you for making that choice.
What's opened?
-
Highway 52 is no longer detoured to the south. Traffic will now be able to travel north and south through Marion. Be aware of traffic that is crossing the northbound lanes of Highway 52 onto eastbound I-90, as well as traffic that may be entering Highway 52 from I-90.
-
I-90 is back to full traffic in the westbound and eastbound lanes. Eastbound I-90 traffic is also crossing Highway 52 on the new eastbound bridge. Eastbound I-90 can also use the Highway 52 exit ramp. Motorists exiting from eastbound I-90 should be alert and aware that the Highway 52 traffic does not stop.
Plans for 2026
- Construct new westbound I-90 bridge
- Straighten and reconstruct westbound I-90 on- and off-ramps, loops. These are in the northeast corner of the interchange.
- Highway 52 will remain open during 2026 with only short-duration detours when the I-90 westbound bridge is demolished and during work that occurs over Highway 52 such as beam setting, concrete bridge deck pouring and other work.
- The ramps to and from westbound I-90 will be closed for periods of time during that reconstruction work. When that occurs, traffic will be detoured, using the on- and off-ramps west at Highway 63 near Stewartville.

-
What about the flyover ramp?
- It's built, but the I-90 westbound bridge needs to be rebuilt next year. Notice the new eastbound I-90 bridge and how it's been lengthened on the west side. That provides space for southbound Highway 52 traffic to reach the flyover bridge that will take them to eastbound I-90. This turn movement will open in late summer or early fall in 2026.
