D3 - I-94 Gap – Albertville to Monticello: 2024 -2026 construction
MnDOT has suspended mainline construction for the 2025–2026 winter season and here’s what you can expect on I-94 between Wright Co. Rd. 37 in Albertville and Hwy 25 in Monticello:
-
Westbound and eastbound lanes have returned to their normal configuration and will remain open with two lanes in each direction until spring 2026. The newly constructed third westbound lane, located nearest the median, will remain closed until fall 2026.
-
The speed limit has returned to 70 miles per hour. However, motorists should slow down if road conditions deteriorate or traffic is congested.
-
In the event of a crash and I-94 closure, use the nearest exit and follow posted alternate route signs.
-
Off-road work may occur year-round along this project, so drivers should remain alert for construction vehicles and crews working near the interstate.

This year, crews widened and reconstructed the westbound road surface; replaced underground drainage structures; built a new westbound bridge over Co. Rd. 19 in Albertville; installed portions of the noise walls along I-94 in Monticello; and widened the westbound bridge over Co. Rd. 75 in Monticello.
In spring 2026, crews will return to expand the eastbound lanes while traffic shifts onto the new westbound lanes—maintaining two lanes in each direction.
Thank you for your patience!
We know driving through a two-lane, head-to-head traffic setup with limited shoulders isn’t easy. Your continued support means a lot as we work to improve this stretch of I-94 for everyone.
Snow, ice, slush, frost and fog can make road conditions change quickly on roads across Minnesota. The MnDOT snow plow fighters want you to get safely to your destination.

When all six lanes open in fall 2026, the $76 million Corridors of Commerce-funded project will provide a smoother ride, extend the life of the interstate, improve freight access, increase capacity, reduce bottlenecks, support area growth, and enhance motorist safety along I-94 in Wright County.
