Later this week, motorists will encounter major traffic changes in downtown Moorhead as the 11th Street underpass construction progresses to the third and final stage of the project! By the end of the day on Thursday, Oct. 30:
- Main Avenue will reopen to east/west traffic only, one lane in each direction
- All lanes will reopen on First Avenue for east/west traffic
- Stage 3 begins on Center Avenue! Center Avenue will close between 10th Street and 14th Street until November 2026.
**Business access: You can still access businesses on Center Avenue! For businesses west of the work zone, please enter from 8th Street.
The closures are happening a few days sooner than expected, as we hit this milestone and take a big step forward on the project! Thank you for your understanding and patience as everyone becomes familiar with the new closures and detours. Your cooperation is appreciated!
What to expect this winter
With work wrapping up in Stage 1 on First Avenue, crews are getting the final signs, striping, signal work and miscellaneous cleanup done. All lanes will reopen on Thursday for east/west traffic, as well as 10th and 12th Streets. There's still a little work to finish on the north block of 11th Street so that area will remain closed for approximately another week.
Over on Main Avenue, while one lane is reopening on Thursday, there's still work to complete. The right lane will remain closed to allow crews to continue to work on the boulevards, sidewalks and the traffic signal system, and to finish up on 11th Street south. They expect all lanes to reopen on Main Avenue in mid- to late-November.
When Center Avenue closes this week, crews will get started on removals. They will work into the winter and for as long as weather allows to prep the area for piling and for construction of the retaining walls. They will also work on getting storm sewer installed from Main Avenue to First Avenue, connecting the pipes to the new lift station's system.

Train horns have resumed in the Downtown Quiet Zone during construction hours (Monday - Friday, 6am - 7pm). This is a requirement of the railroad, and we appreciate your understanding as worker safety is prioritized.

Moorhead businesses are open during construction! If your destination falls within/near the work zone or along the detour routes, please check in with the business to determine the best route there.

Never enter an area that's blocked by barriers or cones. It is not safe to drive, walk or bike around barricades, even in areas where workers aren't present or active. Those boundaries are set up for your safety. There are signed detours installed for both motorists and pedestrians. Please use those routes.
