Crews are finishing up their work along the outside lanes on Third Avenue in Alexandria. They removed and replaced the pedestrian ramps at various intersections, poured lighting bases and installed the electrical hookups for the rapid flashing beacons.
Traffic will switch next week so they can begin work on the inside lanes and the raised concrete center median.
As a reminder, motorists should expect delays and consider alternate routes to avoid backups during peak travel times. Be prepared for sidewalk restrictions and closures in the work zone, and follow the signed pedestrian detour routes.
Please slow down, always travel with caution and be alert for workers and equipment.
Construction activities are weather dependent and subject to change.

Top soil is added around the new pedestrian ramps at Jefferson Street and Third Avenue
At the intersection of Lake Street crews replaced the ramps and installed the electrical hookups for the new rapid flashing beacon, a push-button fixture for an improved pedestrian crossing
In 2023, MnDOT partnered with the city of Alexandria to identify issues and create a local vision for this section of the Highway 29 corridor as part of a pedestrian study.
The project includes the following recommendations that came from that work:
- Removing left turns at Hawthorne, Jefferson, Kenwood and Lake Streets
- Installing rapid flashing beacons at Jefferson and Lake Streets
- Upgrading sidewalks
- Enhancing signals for improved pedestrian crossing at Broadway and Nokomis Streets
