11th Street underpass: 2024-2026 construction

Construction progress: September 2025

There's been much more visible progress on the 11th Street underpass project in the last month! It's always exciting to see concrete going in on any job--an important milestone toward a reopening!   On First Avenue, it's come a long way, although we still have work to get done before the road can open. While the concrete paving of the driving lanes is done and curing, there's still curb and gutter, other radiuses and sections that need to be poured. Based on subcontractor schedules, weather and more, the prime contractor is anticipating reopening First Avenue by October 10. We appreciate your understanding and continued patience through the completion of this work on First Avenue. The lift station control building is getting closer and closer to completion. They are installing the equipment inside, and grading the area that will be the lift station's road. At the KO bridge, BNSF arrived back on-site on Sept. 2 to begin laying the track and ballasts. They expect to finish up in another three to four weeks. Once the track is in place, the trains will be switched off of the shoofly back onto the mainline railroad. At the Hillsboro bridge, excavation under the bridges is ongoing. Crews are also working on the retaining walls at both railroad bridges, and are currently getting the drainage systems in place and other preparations to pour the concrete walls. And finally on Main Avenue, crews have finished the subgrade and are getting the road base ready for paving. Concrete paving is scheduled to start Wednesday on Main Avenue, weather permitting.

Next Coffee & Construction: Sept. 16

Join us at our next Coffee & Construction public meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 9 a.m., at the Hjemkomst Center, 202 1st Ave N. Representatives from MnDOT, Ames Construction and the city of Moorhead will share updates and answer questions about the current progress on the 11th Street underpass. We'll see you there! Other reminders

• Train horns have resumed in the Downtown Quiet Zone during construction hours (Monday - Friday, 6am - 7pm). This is a requirement of the railroad, and we appreciate your understanding as worker safety is prioritized.
• Moorhead businesses are open during construction! If your destination falls within/near the work zone or along the detour routes, please check in with the business to determine the best route there.
• Never enter an area that's blocked by barriers or cones. It is not safe to drive, walk or bike around barricades, even in areas where workers aren't present or active. Those boundaries are set up for your safety. There are signed detours installed for both motorists and pedestrians. Please use those routes.
• There may be other projects in Moorhead that could affect your travel routes, so please check in with the City of Moorhead for plans and impacts. Visit their website or follow the City of Moorhead on Facebook.
