D3 - Hwy 10, 29 & 71 in Wadena: 2025–2027 construction
 Project update for September
Co. Rd. 75 north access closes until early October
On Wed, Sept. 17, crews will close the Leaf River Rd./Otter Tail Co. Rd. 75 access north of Hwy 10 while they reconstruct the connection. This work is expected to take about three weeks to complete.
Drivers should follow detour signs along Hwy 10 to Bluffton Otter Tail Co. Rd. 19 and Co. Rd. 76. See map on project web page.

Hwy 10 work zone
Hwy 10 remains an active work zone with one lane of traffic open each way from Hwy 71 to the west end of the project until Nov. 1. See map on project web page.
- Expect reduced speeds, narrow lanes with no shoulders, workers and equipment. Slow down and navigate with caution.
- Co. Rd. 92 access remains closed. Hospital/clinic access is open for emergencies, visits and appointments only - no through traffic.
Hwy 71 work zone
Hwy 71 remains closed to through traffic from Hwy 10 to Leaf River Rd. until mid-October. Follow detour signs along Hwy 10, Co. Rd. 20 and Leaf River Rd. See map on project web page.
- Hwy 71 is open to local traffic between Birch Ave. and Elm Ave. but expect temporary changes.
-
Hard closures will occur at times from Ironwood Ave. to the north end of the project while crews work under the road. Use the access point closest to your destination when entering or exiting the work zone.
More progress photos :)
The south portion of Hwy 71 from Birch Ave. to north of Elm Ave. now has curb, gutter and three layers of fresh asphalt.
The north half of Hwy 71 beyond Elm Ave. is in progress and remains closed. Crews hope to begin paving in the next couple weeks.
Crews are using a machine to install more than 1,000 wick drains into the ground on the east end of Hwy 10. Each white flag marks a spot where a drain is being placed. These vertical drains help water escape from the soft soil more quickly, which speeds up ground strengthening and helps reduce how much the road settles over time. This work is part of building a column-supported embankment for the future westbound lanes.
 More about this project
When complete in August 2027, travelers will enjoy a smoother, stronger and expanded four-lane highway. Wadena will be safer and easier to get around with updated underground drainage and city services.
