Thank you for signing up to receive updates about the upcoming pedestrian improvement project along Third Avenue/Highway 29 in Alexandria! Construction begins Sept. 2, and we'll share progress updates along the way.
Traffic impacts
Starting Tuesday, Sept. 2, and lasting through mid-October, Third Avenue will be reduced to one lane in both directions between Broadway and Nokomis Streets. The work will start in the outside lanes, then switch about half-way through construction to the inside lanes.
Motorists should expect delays and consider alternate routes to avoid backups during peak travel times. There will also be sidewalk restrictions and closures throughout the work zone, with signed pedestrian detour routes.
Please slow down, always travel with caution and be alert for workers and equipment.
Construction activities are weather dependent and subject to change.
About the project
In 2023, MnDOT partnered with the city of Alexandria to identify issues and create a local vision for this section of the Highway 29 corridor as part of a pedestrian study.
The project includes the following recommendations that came from that work:
- Removing left turns at Hawthorne, Jefferson, Kenwood and Lake Streets
- Installing rapid flashing beacons at Jefferson and Lake Streets
- Upgrading sidewalks
- Enhancing signals for improved pedestrian crossing at Broadway and Nokomis Streets
