Pelican Rapids Week 16: Traffic switch, new detour, concrete and more

Week 16 progress Lots of traffic changes have happened this week on the complete streets project in Pelican Rapids. On the north end on Highway 59, traffic switched on Thursday, Aug. 21, to the other side of the roadway. Crews installed sidewalks and paved the east side of Stage 2C, and then switched traffic and will begin removals on the west side.  Over on Highway 108 west, work started in Stages 3A and 3B, and the road is closed from just east of 1st Street SW to 3rd Street NW. Removals are currently underway, and then pipe crews will be here Monday to start underground utility replacements.

We appreciate everyone's patience navigating the new work zone and detour. Please obey the automated signal at 3rd Street NW in both directions, as traffic flows one way at a time.  Heads up for those who live/travel from Highway 108 west: Eventually crews will need to work within the 3rd Street NW intersection, similar to the work that took place in Anne Lane on the east side of the project. We're still about a month or so away from that taking place, but you'll want to start thinking about your alternate route to/from town for when that short-term closure occurs. More to come as we get closer!

Curb and gutter have been installed in Stage 4A on Highway 108 east between 2 1/2 Street and 4th Street. The soil between 4th Street and 6th Street has been challenging to dry out—not a lot of sunshine or wind hit the grade in that areas. Crews are working the dirt, adding sand and putting all they can into getting the road base fully in place in this section for when concrete crews return next week. We want to give a very big thank you to residents, businesses and visitors on Highway 108 east for your patience during the Stage 4A-C construction. We know it has been slow and frustrating, and we appreciate your understanding of the rain days, wet soil conditions and all the variables that have caused delays. With concrete going in, it's a good sign we're getting closer to the finish line!

• Join us at the Public Library each Thursday at noon for weekly in-person construction updates. **Continuation of these meetings depends on public interest and attendance.

All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather dependent and subject to change. MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones where workers are present, and never enter an area that's blocked by barriers or cones.
