D3 - Hwy 10, 29 & 71 in Wadena: 2025–2027 construction
 Exciting news...
As we wrap up summer and kids get ready to head back to school, we've got some good news about Hwy 10, a detour change for Hwy 71 and some progress photos.
Hwy 10 set to open for Labor Day Weekend :)
In an effort to minimize further delays on the project, crews have been working outside normal construction hours, including weekends. We're happy to share that they're on pace to remove the Hwy 10 detour Fri evening, Aug. 29.
What to expect
- Detour signs will be removed, including the temporary signals at Hwy 29/Co. Rd. 75 and Hwy 29/Co. Rd. 20
- Hwy 10 will remain an active work zone with one lane of traffic open each way between Hwy 71 and the west end of the project Aug. 29- Nov. 1.
- Expect narrow lanes with no shoulders, watch for workers and equipment, slow down, and navigate with care and caution.
- Co. Rd. 92 access will remain closed
- Hospital/clinic access will be open for emergencies, visits and appointments only - no through traffic.

Hwy 71 detour extends north
Crews are ready to work on the north end of the project past Elm Ave. NE., so next week they'll extend the detour north of Wadena.
What to expect
-
DETOUR Sept. 2 to mid-October: Hwy 71 will be closed to through traffic from Hwy 10 to Leaf River Rd.
- Use Hwy 10, Co. Rd. 20 and Leaf River Rd.
-
Birch, Cedar, Deerwood and Elm Ave. will be open to local traffic for access along Hwy 71, but drivers should be ready for temporary changes.
-
Hard closures between Ironwood Ave. and the north end of the project will be necessary at times to work under the road. To minimize delays, use the access point closest to your destination when entering or exiting the work zone.
Upcoming impacts
Late September
Friendly reminders
-
Yes, businesses are open during construction! If you're heading to a spot near the work zone or along the detour, check with them for the best way to get there.
-
Safety is always first. Please slow down, watch for pedestrians, follow construction signs through the work zone and stay out of barricaded areas.
Progress photos
Crews install storm sewer along Hwy 10 east of Co. Rd. 92.
Asphalt paving at the hospital entrance.
A trench box protects workers while they install watermain on Hwy 71 north of Elm Ave.
Crews are building a working platform on the east end of Hwy 10 near Oink Joint Rd. to support construction of the future westbound lanes (above and below). This base of sand and crushed rock will create a stable surface for heavy equipment (below). Next week, crews will begin drilling and installing more than 1,000 concrete piles as part of a column-supported embankment system to stabilize the soft ground beneath the new roadway.
 More about this project
When complete in August 2027, travelers will enjoy a smoother, stronger and expanded four-lane highway. Wadena will be safer and easier to get around, and we'll have updated underground drainage and city services.
