D3 - Hwy 10, 29 & 71 in Wadena: 2025–2027 construction
It's been a busy few weeks with lots of work happening throughout town (and so much rain)! Crews on Hwy 10 have been removing pavement and poor materials west of town with storm sewer drainage pipes being placed and roadway being built behind the excavation operations. They will work to install watermain and sanitary sewer this weekend, Sat-Sun.
Multiple crews have also been working on the Hwy 71 underground utilities such as sanitary sewer and watermain. The hospital‘s pedestrian tunnel removal work is also nearly complete.
Work zone reminders
Wadena businesses are still open for everyone; however, watch for temporary changes to access in the active work zone. Please continue to drive carefully, always follow construction signs, use the entrance closest to where you're going and stay out of closed-off areas.

Crews load off-road dump trucks with sand that will be used to build the new westbound Hwy 10 roadway.
With the reconstruction of Hwy 71 and the new healthcare campus now located on Hwy 10, the hospital decided to remove the old pedestrian tunnel (shown above). This means they no longer need to maintain an old, unused tunnel and ensures a strong foundation for the new roadway.
After the tunnel removal, workers form up the head wall, sealing it off with reinforced concrete. They will backfill the roadway with dirt once it's cured.
More about this project
When complete in August 2027, travelers will enjoy a smoother, stronger and expanded four-lane highway. Wadena will be safer and easier to get around, and we'll have updated underground drainage and city services.
