Difficult to see in the photo, however, a mother duck and her ducklings were spotted using the pedestrian crossing at the new roundabout. The family of ducks safely made it through the detour and construction site. Bystanders did question the duck's motives for utilizing the crossing within a construction zone, but the only reply was "quack".
Highway 371 construction update: June 20

Traffic impacts: Detour is still in effect for local traffic using CR 5 & CR 45, as well as the local bypass to First Street
- Begin pavement removals and storm sewer from the roundabout to Murray Ave.

This urban reconstruction project includes constructing a roundabout at the intersection of Highway 371 and Cass County Road 5. Project elements also include reconstructing and paving Highway 371, sidewalk upgrades, utility improvements and replacing a box culvert near Barthelemy Avenue.
Once finished, this stretch of Highway 371 in Hackensack will include a safer road, safer intersections, longer lasting driving surface, improved drainage and pedestrian accessibility. It is expected to be complete mid-October, weather permitting.
