Z ARCHIVE Metro - I-94 in Minneapolis: 2024-2025 construction
Driving downtown to the Weeknd concert at U.S. Bank Stadium or another event this weekend? Don't let the I-94 closure get in the way of your entertainment activities. Be sure to plan ahead and take an alternate route.
Starting at 9 p.m. Fri, June 13, we’ll be closing all I-94 entrance and exit ramps between I-35W and Huron Blvd. An hour later at 10 p.m., both directions of I-94 will be fully closed in the same area. Crews are doing a traffic shift from the eastbound lanes to the westbound lanes this weekend, so they’ll be able to continue their bridge repair work along eastbound I-94.
To avoid the closure, please follow the posted detour of I-35W to Hwy 36 to I-35E to I-94.
By 5 a.m. on Mon, June 16, I-94 will reopen and be reduced to two lanes in each direction on the west side of the interstate through mid-August.
The following ramps will remain closed through mid-August:
- The ramp from northbound I-35W to eastbound I-94
- The ramp from South 6th St. to eastbound I-94
- The ramp from Huron Blvd. to eastbound I-94
- The ramp from eastbound I-94 to Huron Blvd.
- The ramp from Riverside Ave. to eastbound I-94
- The ramp from Cedar Ave. to eastbound I-94
Please use alternate routes to bypass these ramp closures.
Additionally, Cedar Ave. will be reduced to one lane in each direction under the I-94 bridges from 5 a.m. Mon, June 16 through early August.
The Hiawatha LRT Trail between 15th Ave. South and East Franklin Ave. will also be closed starting at 5 a.m. Mon, June 16 through mid-July.
All lanes on I-94 between I-35W and Huron Blvd. are expected to reopen to traffic for the Minnesota State Fair starting in mid-August through Labor Day. Final construction activities will resume after Labor Day and last through the fall.
We appreciate your patience while we make these improvements. Plan ahead by checking 511, and give yourself additional time to reach your destination.
All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule permitting and subject to change.
Please drive with care in work zones:
- Slow down when approaching every work zone, then navigate with care and caution.
- Stay alert; work zones constantly change.
- Watch for workers and slow-moving equipment.
- Obey posted speed limits. The fine for a violation in a work zone is $300.
- Minimize distractions behind the wheel.
- Be patient; expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
