Metro - I-35W in Burnsville: 2025-2026 construction
Beginning at 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 3 through early July, crews will close the ramp from Burnsville Pkwy. to southbound I-35W. This closure is necessary so that crews can rebuild the Burnsville Pkwy. bridge. If you plan on traveling in the area, use the following detours:
-
Westside of I-35W
- Southbound I-35W to westbound 13 to Co. Rd. 5 to Burnsville Pkwy.
-
Eastside of I-35W
- Southbound I-35W to eastbound Hwy 13 to Nicollet Ave. to Burnsville Pkwy.
Also at that time, watch for changes in the traffic patterns on both directions of I-35W. You will continue to be reduced to two lanes in both directions between Burnsville Pkwy. and the I-35/35W/35E split.
The ramp closure from Burnsville Pkwy. to northbound I-35W that was scheduled for May 28, has been rescheduled, and is now expected to occur in early July.
Reminder I-35W E-ZPass in Burnsville
April through November, there will not be an E-ZPass option between the I-35W split in Burnsville and Cliff Rd. for either direction of I-35W.
We appreciate your patience while we make these improvements. Plan ahead by checking 511, and give yourself additional time to reach your destination.
All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule permitting and subject to change.
Please drive with care in work zones:
- Slow down when approaching every work zone, then navigate with care and caution.
- Stay alert; work zones constantly change.
- Watch for workers and slow-moving equipment.
- Obey posted speed limits. The fine for a violation in a work zone is $300.
- Minimize distractions behind the wheel.
- Be patient; expect delays, especially during peak travel times.

In coordination with the City of Burnsville and Dakota County, we will resurface I-35W and repair or replace bridges between Cliff Rd. and the Burnsville split during the 2025 and 2026 construction seasons. During construction crews will make the following road and bridge updates:
- Replace pavement on I-35W
- Repair or replace bridges at Hwy 13 and Cliff Rd.
- Update guardrail
- Improve drainage
Crews expect to complete the work in fall 2026. Once finished, this stretch of I-35W will have a smoother road surface and an extended bridge and pavement life.
