It's been a rainy week in Pelican Rapids! While some minor work was performed as conditions allowed, the rain made it challenging for the bulk of this week's plans. As things dry out, crews are finishing up what they can, then they'll pause for the holiday weekend and be back at it on Tuesday!
2025 Week 3 construction progress
Crews continue to prep Stages 4A and 4B on Highway 108 east for underground utility work, which is now planned to start on June 2 at 2 1/2 Street, working east. As part of these preparations, on Tuesday, May 27, weather permitting, there will be a short-term closure at 4th Street (the work zone cut across for business access on the north side) for a portion of the day while they cut in a valve. When this happens, the barricades will close 4th Street at First Avenue, and those seeking to access businesses should use 2 1/2 Street. They'll open the barricades back up after they're done and then 4th Street SE will resume being the primary business access route. A temporary passage has been built behind the new pool to connect access from the church's parking lot to the nursing home/clinic lots.
If traveling in or near the work zone, please drive slowly and with extreme caution, and watch for equipment and workers. Safety is everyone's job!

On the east side of Highway 59, in Stage 2B, underground utility replacements continue. Sanitary sewer is in, and crews are working on hooking up services, and will also be getting started on watermain, followed by storm sewer replacements.
As a reminder, your patience is important. Motorists should expect to stop at the automated signal, and wait until the light turns green before proceeding. Traffic flows one direction at a time, so if entering in the middle of the work zone, please follow the correct direction of traffic. Even during off-hours, when crews aren't present and traffic volumes are low, please obey the signal lights.
On Highway 108 west, crews have finished entrance pipes, but continue with shoulder work. You'll see landscaping crews stop out to do some temporary seeding for erosion control in areas that will be untouched for a duration of time.

Important reminders
-
Weekly construction updates: Join us at the Pelican Rapids Public Library each Thursday at noon for in-person construction updates. Business liaison Brent Frazier, and representatives from MnDOT and Landwehr Construction will be there to share updates and answer questions.
-
Businesses remain open during road construction: Access will be maintained to both businesses and residences, but entrances may change or shift as utility replacements and concrete work are underway. How you enter or exit may vary depending on where crews are working, and you may need to park and walk up to some locations. Please check in with your destination to determine the best way to get to them.
-
Thru-traffic and trucks: For those who don’t have a destination in Pelican Rapids, the signed thru-traffic/truck routes outside of town are still be an option. Expect delays in Pelican Rapids during peak travel times.

Travel reminder: Know before you go
Have Memorial Day weekend travel plans? Check 511mn.org for statewide traffic impacts. The project in Pelican Rapids is just one of many road construction projects happening on Minnesota highways. Before you go, check the 511 map to see where you may encounter work zones, detours and more. Always slow down in work zones (even when workers aren't present) and never enter an area blocked by barriers or cones.

Signing up for this project email list is just one way to stay informed during construction. There are several different ways you can find information or get your questions answered:
All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather dependent and subject to change. MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones where workers are present, and never enter an area that's blocked by barriers or cones.
