D3 - I-94 Gap – Albertville to Monticello: 2024 -2026 construction
 Heads up for I-94 commuters!
Expect single-lane closures between St. Michael and Monticello tomorrow, Thu, May 22, from 3 a.m. to 11 a.m. Crews will be repairing the road surface in the driving lanes. Both lanes will reopen once repairs are finished. Keep in mind that off-road work and periodic lane closures can happen anytime on this project.
I-94 work continues
Both directions open, includes Memorial Day Weekend May 23-26
- I-94 remains open to two lanes each way on the adjacent eastbound side as crews reconstruct the westbound side between Albertville and Monticello.
- Pay attention and be prepared for changes—lane shifts, no shoulders, concrete barriers between eastbound and westbound traffic, real-time travel displays ahead of the work zone, multiple crews at work, changes to local access and reduced speeds
- Consider alternate routes or travel at off-peak hours to avoid delays
- Note: Plan your travel this weekend—Memorial Day
- If a crash occurs and I-94 closes, use nearest exit and follow alternate route signs
- Know before you go. For current road impacts on I-94, visit 511mn.org
In late fall, work operations will suspend for the 2025-2026 winter season with each direction of I-94 back to two lanes. In 2026, crews will return and expand the eastbound lanes while traffic shifts onto the new westbound lanes.
I-94 Gap project location map. In 2025, crews will expand westbound I-94 to three lanes from east of Co. Rd. 37 in Albertville to Hwy 25 in Monticello
When all six lanes open in fall 2026, the $76 million Corridors of Commerce-funded project will provide a smoother ride, extend the life of the interstate, improve freight access, increase capacity and reduce bottle necks, address area growth and improve motorist safety along I-94 in Wright County.
