Metro - I-35W in Burnsville: 2025-2026 construction
If you are traveling on I-35W between Burnsville and Bloomington April 25-28 you can expect detours as crews close both directions of I-35W between the I-35/I-35W/I-35E split and I-494.
Beginning at 9 p.m. Fri, April 25, crews will close I-35W in both directions between the I-35/I-35W/I-35E Burnsville split and I-494 in Bloomington through 6 a.m. Mon, April28. This closure is necessary to remove the Burnsville Pkwy. and the Hwy 13 bridges over I-35W. During the closure follow the signed detours using I-35E, Hwy 77 and I-494. I
Also starting at 9 p.m. Fri, April 25, Cliff Rd. under I-35W will be closed through October 2025. Motorists on the west side of I-35W should follow the detour using 123rd St. west to Dupont Ave. to 126th St. to Co. Rd. 5 to Hwy 13 to Nicollet Ave. to Cliff Rd. Motorists on the east side of I-35W should follow the detour using Cliff Rd. to Nicollet Ave. to Hwy 13 to Hwy 5 to 126th St. to Dupont Ave. back to Cliff Rd.

E-ZPass on I-35W between the I-35W split and Cliff Road
Beginning Mon, April 21 through November, there will not be an E-ZPass option between the I-35W split in Burnsville and Cliff Rd. for either direction of I-35W.
We appreciate your patience while we make these improvements. Plan ahead by checking 511, and give yourself additional time to reach your destination.
All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule permitting and subject to change.
Please drive with care in work zones:
- Slow down when approaching every work zone, then navigate with care and caution.
- Stay alert; work zones constantly change.
- Watch for workers and slow-moving equipment.
- Obey posted speed limits. The fine for a violation in a work zone is $300.
- Minimize distractions behind the wheel.
- Be patient; expect delays, especially during peak travel times.

In coordination with the City of Burnsville and Dakota County, we will resurface I-35W and repair or replace bridges between Cliff Rd. and the Burnsville split during the 2025 and 2026 construction seasons. During construction crews will make the following road and bridge updates:
- Replace pavement on I-35W
- Repair or replace bridges at Hwy 13 and Cliff Rd.
- Update guardrail
- Improve drainage
Crews expect to complete the work in fall 2026. Once finished, this stretch of I-35W will have a smoother road surface and an extended bridge and pavement life.
