D3 - I-94 Gap – Albertville to Monticello: 2024 -2026 construction
Crews to expand westbound in 2025
Travelers should plan for roadwork and delays, as the second of the three-year I-94 Gap project gets underway.
Temporary lane widening and crossovers were completed in 2024. This year, MnDOT will expand westbound I-94 to three lanes from Wright Co. Rd. 37 in Albertville to west of Hwy 25 in Monticello.
Crews will reconstruct the road surface; replace or repair underground drainage structures; construct a new westbound bridge over County Road 19 in Albertville; install part of the noise walls along I-94 in Monticello; and widen the westbound bridge over County Road 75 in Monticello.
Here’s what you can expect through the 2025 work zone
-
Prep work begins April 8: Periodic single-lane closures on both directions of I-94 as crews set up the work zone and concrete barrier. Lane closures will occur at off-peak hours, mainly overnights.
-
Expand lanes April 14 to early/mid-November: I-94 will remain open to two lanes each way on the adjacent eastbound side as crews work on the westbound side between Albertville and Monticello.
- Pay attention and be prepared for changes—lane shifts, no shoulders, concrete barriers between eastbound and westbound traffic, real-time travel displays ahead of the work zone, multiple crews at work, changes to local access and reduced speeds
- Consider alternate routes or travel at off-peak hours to avoid delays
- If a crash occurs and I-94 closes, use nearest exit and follow alternate route signs

In late fall, work operations will suspend for the 2025-2026 winter season with each direction of I-94 back to two lanes. In 2026, crews will return and expand the eastbound lanes while traffic shifts onto the new westbound lanes.
Off-road work and periodic lane closures to occur anytime on this project.

When all six lanes open in fall 2026, the $76 million Corridors of Commerce-funded project will provide a smoother ride, extend life of the interstate, improve freight access, increase capacity and reduce bottle necks, address area growth and improve motorist safety along I-94 in Wright County.
